Terms of use

Ethical Tube is a free website with three parts: a screen recorder, a set of file converters and tools, and a library of sacred texts organized by language. You don't need an account for any of them, and there's nothing to buy. By using the site, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use it.

You may use the recorder and converters for personal, educational, and commercial work. You're responsible for what you record or convert, including getting permission from people who appear in a recording and respecting the copyright in anything you capture.

The recorder and the converters run in your browser. A recording is made on your computer and saved to your computer when you download it, and files you convert are processed on your device instead of being uploaded to us. Because we never receive those files, we can't recover a recording you didn't save, so keep your own copies of anything important.

Leaving the recording page before you download a video can lose it. The site warns you before you leave a page with an unsaved recording, but your browser and your device are outside our control.

Ethical Tube does not collect donations today. There is no payment form, no donate button, and no way to send us money through the site. If someone asks you for money in Ethical Tube's name, the request isn't from us.

We may decide to accept voluntary donations in the future. If we do, giving will be entirely optional. A donation won't buy features, priority, access to any page, or anything else on the site, and everything that's free will stay free whether or not you give.

A gift also won't buy a religious service. It won't pay for a prayer, puja, blessing, or ritual performed on your behalf, and it won't be passed to a temple, church, mosque, synagogue, gurdwara, or any other place of worship. The sacred-text pages will read the same for everyone, whether or not they give.

Before we accept any gift, we'll update these terms to say who receives it, how it's processed, whether it can be refunded, and whether it's tax-deductible where you live. Don't assume a gift to Ethical Tube is tax-deductible unless these terms say so.

The sacred-text pages present ancient, traditional, and public-domain scripture with explanations written by Ethical Tube. They're offered for reading, study, and reflection. They're general information, not religious instruction, and they aren't legal, medical, financial, or tax advice. For questions of belief, practice, or ritual, ask a teacher or leader in your own tradition.

The explanations describe common readings of each text, and traditions differ in how they understand the same words. We aim to be accurate and respectful, and every text page names the edition its scripture was checked against so you can compare it for yourself.

The scripture on the sacred-text pages is ancient or traditional, or comes from editions and translations in the public domain, and each page names its sources. Public-domain text is free for anyone to use. The explanations, articles, and design of the site are Ethical Tube's own work. You may quote short passages with a link back to the page, but please don't republish whole articles.

The recorder and converters include open-source software released under its own licenses, which are listed with their source code on the Open-source licenses page.

Don't use Ethical Tube to break the law, to record people without the consent the law requires, to infringe anyone else's rights, or to interfere with the site, for example by overloading it with automated requests.

We work to keep Ethical Tube reliable, but the site is provided as is, without warranties of any kind. Features may change, pause, or stop, and a recording or conversion can fail. To the extent the law allows, Ethical Tube isn't liable for lost recordings, lost files, or indirect losses that come from using the site. Some places don't allow these limits, so they apply only as far as your local law permits.

We may update these terms as the site changes, and we'll change the date at the top of this page when we do. If we ever start accepting donations, these terms will be updated before the first gift is accepted, not after.
